I was recently sent a variety of snacks and given the opportunity to do a Somersault Snack Co review and I am very flattered and happy by it. By now you all know I love finding new healthy (and tasty) snacks and this is no exception.
With our busy, on-the-go lives we were desperate for a healthy snack that we could grab anytime – something that would nourish and tickle our taste buds. Disenchanted by unsatisfying snacks, we set out to create our own to share with other active people, just like us.
What we discovered on our quest was a surprise — the sunflower seed! We learned that seeds are the new nut, offering the perfect blend of protein, fiber and balanced nutrition with an excellent taste.
This was the beginning of these healthy snacks baked with sunflower seeds and toasted grains. Somersault Snack Co. puts an emphasis on healthy, fun and they commit to offer us nothing but natural and healthy snacks, made with love and few pure ingredients, to enjoy throughout our active life.
Evelin, her husband and Somersault
I received samples of all five of Somersault’s sunflower seed snacks – Cinnamon Crunch, Salty Pepper, Pacific Sea Salt, Dutch Cocoa and Santa Fe Salsa. All five flavors Somersault offer are vegetarian and three of them are vegan – Cinnamon Crunch, Salty pepper and Pacific Sea Salt. I tried the three vegan ones and let my husband be the judge on the two vegetarian flavors.
First of all, the packaging of the standard size bags come with a ziplock (and you might already know I love that feature when it comes to snacks), which makes for a perfect snack to bring along on a hike, while traveling or to just have a few bits of the snacks and be able to re-seal and save the rest of the goodness for later. I don’t know about you, but I live in a place where open bags of snacks are hard to keep around due to humidity and ants – so I love not having to worry about them going bad (or eaten by bugs) if I don’t finish it all right away. Plus, the looks of the Somersault packages are really cute. When I recently visited the local health food store I found Somersault in the shelves and the somersaulting figures on the packages right away put a smile on my face.
As for the taste, consistency and nutrition: The Somersaults are bite sized and has a dense and crunchy consistency. There is a generous amount of whole sunflower seeds mixed into the nuggets which makes the texture feel a bit nutty, even though these snacks are completely nut free. When eating these snacks the sunflower seeds creates a creamy taste, which I think is absolutely wonderful. As for the different flavors; all but the Dutch Cocoa and the Cinnamon Crunch, are savory. The flavors are very well balanced and goes great together with the taste of the sunflower seeds. Here’s what we (husband and I) thought about the different flavors.
- Pacific Sea Salt – Nice, perfectly salted and a great sunflower seed taste (which comes through in all flavors)
- Cinnamon Crunch – Great, sweet but not too sweet snack.
- Salty Pepper – The ingredients in the snack compliments the pepper perfectly. Pepper flavor really comes through, without being overpowering.
- Dutch Cocoa – Sweet, but not too sweet. Like a nutty chocolate cookie, reminds me a bit of the chocolate Teddy Graham’s I got as a treat as a child.
- Santa Fe Salsa – Mild, well balanced flavors which actually reminds me of Pizza Margarita.
Needless to say, both my husband and I were loving the Somersaults! The first ones we tried were the Cinnamon Crunch. I’m normally not the biggest fan of cinnamon flavored things (I think I had one too many “pepparkaka” growing up in Sweden) so I thought that these ones would be my least favorite of the vegan flavors, but they really hit the spot for me! They are just enough flavored and I actually could not stop eating them. (Well, I did. Finally, after my husband slapped my wrist a few times to have me leave some for him too.) As for the other two vegan flavors, they were both wonderful! Both my husband and I were REALLY impressed with the Salty Pepper ones (we both love pepper and think that it’s rarely accentuated enough in food) – they might be my #1 choice. Or the Cinnamon Crunch, I guess it’s a tie between them? I also really enjoyed the Pacific Sea Salt flavor, they would be my choice instead of “normal salted chips” any day – I really liked the salty crunchy nuggets. As for my husband trying the Santa Fe Salsa and the Dutch Cocoa – from the speed he put those snacks down I can only imagine that they were pretty great! I admit I was a bit jealous seeing him “inhaling” the chocolate ones – yes I have a soft spot for chocolate – he seemed to enjoy them a lot!
As for nutrition – these little nuggets are packed with great things. With sunflower seeds as the #1 ingredient and wonderful ingredients like for example sesame seeds and whole wheat added, they are a great source of Vitamin E, calcium, iron, fiber, potassium, antioxidants and folate. All ingredients used in the Somersaults are all-natural and of highest quality. One serving (14 nuggets) of the Cinnamon Crunch Somersaults contain 140 calories and the fats in the snacks are of the good kind – polyunsaturated and monounsaturated. Take a look at these interesting facts about the Somersaults:
- 22% less fat and fewer calories than potato chips.
- The same fiber but 92% less sugar than an apple.
- Cinnamon is a great source of fiber, iron, and calcium!
- Twice the protein and less sodium than pretzel sticks.
- Fewer carbs and 82% less sugar than a low fat yogurt.
- 4x more antioxidants than blueberries…
- AND 50% more protein than almonds!
I love this! On top of that these snacks are Non-GMO certified, which in times like these sound really great to me. Do you agree? I hope so! You can read more about the Somersault ingredients in their Ingredient Glossary.
So the conclusion is – both my husband and I have found a new healthy snack to use when in need of an in between meal “pick me up”, a pre workout/post workout boost, or a snack to bring when we’re out and about camping, hiking etc. We both recommend picking Somersault Snacks up when you see them and give them a go – who knows, you might end up doing somersaults of joy?!
We encourage you to take a moment of FUN in every day and take our Somersaults with you along the way!
